Pittsburgh Regional Initiative for Diabetes Education

Diabetes affects nearly 800,000 Pennsylvania residents each year. As the diabetes epidemic continues to grow, health care providers must explore new ways of providing diabetes education, prevention and treatment.

In an effort to combat the diabetes epidemic, the University of Pittsburgh Diabetes Institute launched a regional health care collaboration to improve diabetes education and care. Pittsburgh Regional Initiative for Diabetes Education (PRIDE) was established through the efforts of Congressman John P. Murtha to promote diabetes education in the broadest sense to:

  • health care providers – to assist the members of the health care team in providing quality care and education
  • the public – to promote an understanding of the diabetes epidemic and to influence health care policy decisions
  • people affected by diabetes – to provide diabetes prevention programs for those at risk and education to people who are diagnosed with diabetes
